Malfric sees through the eyes of the dead – literally reliving their last moments as if they were his own. This ability is highly sought, and highly priced which is why the unscrupulous Captain Finch hires him to find the murderer of a nobleman and the whereabouts of a valuable artifact.
Quantex, the able-bodied first mate of Captain Finch, quickly becomes Malfric’s foil as he demonstrates uncommon intelligence during the investigation. Together the two uncover several clues that lead them to the killer, the artifact, and the frayed end of a mysterious plot that begins to unravel the moment Malfric takes it in hand and gives it a good yank.

I really enjoyed this book. It's my first read of steampunk genre and I found the world it's set in quite interesting. The characters are rich and have real depth. I loved the descriptions of the places, the people and the ships. The descriptions of the action scenes made me feel like I could really see it happening. It flowed well and was a refreshing, original story. I love the way the imagery ties things together on more than just the obvious levels. Shannon Wendtland has created a world and characters with so many possibilities and I think this novella just gives us a taste of much more to come. I am looking forward to reading more books written in this world and about these characters.Product details

Heliodor eBook Shannon Wendtland Reviews
This is a wonderful read! Full of rich narrative and detail, the story evokes mystery, suspense, wistfulness and intrigue. An awful lot to pack into such a short work. Truly, this must be a start of a series. It is too good to stop here. Bring it on! I will be watching for the further adventures of Malfric and crew.
This was my first foray into Ms. Wendtland's work and I'm so glad I came along for the ride. Vivid descriptions, an attention to detail, and a compelling story make this steampunk adventure a must read!
I received a copy of this book in return for a fair and honest review.
Malfric is a voyeur. A blind man who is able to see through the eyes of the dead, and witness their final moments. That’s the premise of this Steampunk novella, and it makes for some uniquely interesting slices of writing. Steampunk is renowned for its visual impressions, and you would think that, with half of the scenes being written from the point of view of a blind man, a big chunk of imagery would be lost, but that is not the case. The author has done a sterling job of placing the reader in a world lived without sight, by supplying a wealth of detail for the other senses, from the warmth of the sun and the sound of street urchins, to the reek of a sailor’s breath.
Because of this, Malfric definitely provides the work with its strongest scenes, and even those where he relives the final moments of the dead are written in a unique and engaging way. I loved the odd, backwards, analytical way that the scenes are delivered, giving them an almost forensic air.
I must admit that I was expecting more at the book’s end in terms of the relationship between Malfric and the female protagonist, but I get the impression that this will be part of a longer continuing storyline. I would also have liked to see a little more detail of the world the author has created. This is only a novella, though, and it does provide a fascinating glimpse into what appears to be an intriguing world, ripe for further expansion.
This is a short, snappy mystery with a strong voice and style. Great characters, well developed setting (I felt like I was there), and excellent pacing. Highly recommended!
