I did enjoy and felt uplifted by this story. Jane seems like the kind of person you'd want as a friend. But she doesn't resent the rude way her sister treats her, a bit hard to believe, but does feel hurt. I liked that the author was able to lift the story up by making the sister feel remorse, and by having her fall for someone other than the one her sister fell for. So both could turn out happy. The Duke Enamored by Humility edition by Grace Fletcher Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Susan is the belle of every ball she attends, but she is vain and boastful of her beauty. She now has George, the Duke of Seymour, in her sights. Her parents make much of Susan and ignore the less beautiful Jane. Susan often says hurtful things to Jane, but Jane is always kind and forgiving.
The Duke has been badly hurt by a woman in Paris and believes that women look for a man with money while men look for a woman with beauty.
If you need a break from the world here it is. This is a sweet innocent book and an enjoyable read. Take an hour and relax your mind.
This story has an amazing storyline that completely draws you into. You cannot help falling in love with the characters and feeling all of their emotions as if they were you. This story sucks you in and I couldn't put it down until the end. I cannot wait for the next book!
Of the two sisters, Jane is the quiet one. It's not that she's shy, and certainly not that she lacks intelligence or spirit. It is simply that her beautiful, vivacious, and rather spoiled sister, Susan, tends to outshine her. Jane doesn't mind; it is only natural, after all, and she never wanted to be in the limelight, anyway. She's happy with the small things in life. And even if her family does tend to take her for granted and sometimes speak down to her, they aren't cruel; they do love her, in their own way.
So, when Duke George Seymour comes to call on Susan, Jane isn't surprised. When Susan goes to great effort to 'play hard to get', though, then Jane is shocked and rather embarrassed. How can Susan treat such a good man that way?
As for Duke George, what's a man to do when the woman who has caught his fancy is intent upon ignoring him but talk to her sister? And when that sister shows herself to be everything sweet and good? Well, then...
This novella, as advertised, is clean, which I appreciated. The editing is decent, but, fair warning, the writing style isn't quite what I'd expect from a Regency book. The speech and writing is quite casual and modern. Not a bad thing, but if you're expecting the usual, old-fashioned way of speaking, you will be disappointed. All in all, an enjoyable story about looking beyond appearances and discovering the person underneath.
I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
The storyline is sweet yet predictable. The plain sister Jane who is constantly in the shadow of her beautiful sister Susan. Susan manages to catch the eye of a charming Duke who considers her as a possible bride. The reason I give this story 2 star rating is because the author did not take a little more time with the manner of address for the characters such as calling a duke my Lord when the proper address for a duke or duchess is Your Grace. The author seemed to catch it in the very last chapter. Susan and Jane would never have been addressed as lady because their father did not have a title. Earls, Marquis and Dukes daughters are titled lady. Susan and Jane would be called Miss. Riding in an open carriage would have been acceptable for the ladies. Riding alone in a closed carriage would not have been acceptable. Also a younger sister was never a good chaperone but ok.
The second glaring mistake is the Duke and his friend Colonel Riley were in the Navy and not soldiers. Colonel Riley would have been in the army on land. Secondly it would have been rare and unnecessary for the heir to a duke to be in the military because of the need for the title to go to the first born. A second son would go to war and a third son would probably go into the clergy.
Susan would not have married penniless Colonel Riley either. She loved beautiful gowns, jewels and attending balls and Colonel Riley would not have a means to provide for her at all. So it was out of character for Susan or her parents to want her to marry him.
So a little research would have gone a long way to making this story a solid 4 stars. I hope the author takes more time in future novels and she will write a wonderful story.
